John Ross David Oliver ~ Tony Field ~  Alexandra Zealey

"John, I think we also need a general 'MOT' on the action. All is extremely well with the instrument and it is still a joy to play, we must keep things up to the highest level!"

John Ross

John Ross followed his father's profession into the world of the piano, where he served in the Technical Department of Steinway & Sons  London since his introduction as an apprentice.  He was taught and coached by the senior esteemed Steinway concert technicians of the day.

John possesses immense experience within the piano rebuilding and concert technician business. Since his apprenticeship days, he has been both hands on, and responsible for overseeing the rebuilding, repairing and servicing of hundreds of Steinway grand and upright pianos. He has represented Steinway on the concert stage throughout the UK and overseas.

He worked during the day as a workshop technician, and also on evenings and weekends as a concert technician with many of the big names. At the time the London recording scene was particularly busy.  Decca, Deutsche Grammophon, Philips and EMI made legendary recordings with legendary artists - Claudio Arrau, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Dame Janet Baker, James Galway, Andre Previn.

John took over the management of the Steinway London workshops. In this position he was not only charged with the day to day running of operations, but all technician training and quality control of both technical and polishing work.

When his mentor Michael Glazebrook retired from his role of Technical Manager at Steinway Hall, John also took over this position, becoming responsible for the Steinway servicing, repair and restoration work for the entire UK.

John temporarily stepped into the role of managing the tuning department in addition to his other responsibilities, and was subsequently made National Manager of Technical Services, where he remained until his semi-retirement in 2008.

David Oliver

David Oliver's enthusiasm when working with the piano is as great now, as those early days at the famous London Park Royal Steinway workshop. There he trained as an apprentice, honing the skills of a fully qualified restoration, service and concert technician.

He quickly rose to prominence with Steinway and Sons. During the day he repaired, restored, regulated and voiced the workshop pianos.  In the evenings and weekends he represented the company at concert and recording studios. And worked for many of the renowned artists: Vladimir Ashkenazy, Andre Previn, Oscar Peterson, Frank Sinatra, Peter Katin, Errol Garner, Lady Barbirolli and many more.

During the seventies David was offered the job as Head Technician with Bluthner Pianos London, where he was solely responsible for maintaining the concert piano fleet also the hiring and training of the technical staff. This transitioned him into manufacturing and
Welmar Pianos London appointed him their Factory Manager.

He has supplemented his immense array of Steinway skills by attending product trainings with Bechstein, Bosendorfer and Fazioli.

Following his early semi retirement in the nineties, David returned to his first love; specialising in concert preparation and tuning. He now works with most of the countries concert and recording venues for many of this generation's leading artists. These include: Nikolai Demidenko, Steven Hough, Angela Hewitt, Piers Lane, Artur Pizaro, Herbie Hancock, Lang Lang, John Lill, Anne Dudley, Emma Johnson.
